Why taking action creates success

Updated: Jun 26, 2018

Taking the first step is usually the hardest, but it's the only way to get where you want to go.

When was the last time you reflected on a goal you wanted to achieve? A new career, relationship, vacation or maybe a fitness goal. We sit and daydream about better days ahead and even begin to formulate a plan on how we are going to achieve those goals. Then a day goes by and then another and before you realize it months have passed and you are not any closer to to your goal. Why is it so hard to take that first step? One word - Fear.

Fear of Failure

“If you always do what you've always done, then you will always get what you've always gotten.” - John C. Maxwell

Failure can mean different things to different people. Some believe that failure is not accomplishing a goal that you set out for. For others, it means that they accomplished the goal, but didn't get the outcome they sought or other challenges were created. Have you ever said to yourself or heard a loved one say "it's just not worth trying, I don't want to be disappointed". This mindset, is fear of failure and it has kept so many from moving forward and living a fulfilled life. #livingafulfilledlife

Take Action

To grow, we must fail. Stop for a moment and really think about that. When a child begins taking their first step, they fall. They fall a lot. Eventually they learn to balance their bodies and position their feet and they begin to fall less, each time getting better and better and before long they are walking with grace and then running. We can not just run towards our goals, we need to take baby steps and EXPECT failures along the way. The first step is to take action - write down your goal and write down at least 10 baby steps that you can take to achieve your goal.

Fail and Fail again

“Failure is the greatest opportunity I have to know who I really am.” - John Killinger

Once you have your goal written down and at least 10 action items that will help you achieve your goal it's time to move forward and start failing. Really. When you are setting out to accomplish something you have never done before you cannot expect that it will be perfect the first time. What can be expected is that it will go wrong and that you have an opportunity to learn and make improvements until you achieve the result you want. Every successful business person did not achieve greatness from never making mistakes, they achieved greatness from learning from their mistakes. #learnfrommistakes

Progress

As you move forward with each of your action items and you fail, learn, and modify you will ultimately achieve your goal. Understanding that the ultimate goal is progress, when we are moving our lives forward we are living a more fulfilled and happy life.
